Congratulations to our Head of Junior School
Lauren has been awarded the role of Gold Coast Network Convenor for the REAIE – Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange. This prestigious appointment signifies that she will serve as the spokesperson, oversee professional development, and be the network representative for the Gold Coast region of early years centres and schools.
Her responsibilities will also encompass connecting with networks across all states and territories and playing a pivotal role in the National Reggio Convention, a significant event that attracts approximately 2000 professionals from all over Australia and New Zealand every 2 years.
Beyond her official duties, what truly stands out is Lauren's unwavering commitment and passion for her work. Her dedication has always been evident, and this role works hand-in-hand with the Head of Junior School role, which underscores her drive to make a meaningful impact in education.
This monumental achievement is truly fantastic news as Lauren continues the amazing work she does in the Early Years sector at Silkwood School. Well done, Lauren. We are proud of your relentless passion and dedication.
Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant
Exciting news, everyone!
We're buzzing with joy to share that our Bee Wonderful Project has been awarded a 2023 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant!
The Bee Wonderful Project has received a 2023 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant. The initiative, undertaken by enthusiastic Year 5 students, aimed to address the decline in native bee populations by planting bee-friendly plants near the Middle School yarning circle.
This real-world learning opportunity, aligned with the Silkwood framework, allowed students to develop skills, explore interests, and foster a sense of connection to the campus.
The grant facilitated the creation of bee nurseries, guided by Ben from LEAP, and connected with existing hives on campus. With enthusiasm, our students have created their own bee nurseries, eagerly hanging them up in preparation for the establishment of new hives. The students strategically placed native plants to support the surrounding bush area, extending their impact across the school.
The collaboration with Greg, Silkwood Site Team Leader, ensured successful planting in protected native bush areas. The project, made possible by the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant, not only reconnects students with the land but also deepens their understanding of the school environment, nurturing a love for nature and sustainability.
Special thanks were extended to Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants for their support in growing the next generation of environmental champions.

Year 12 Graduation Ceremony
It was another magical moment on the Silkwood School calendar: the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. This year, we farewelled 54 students in the largest graduating class Silkwood has had to date! The ceremony began with a beautiful grounding ceremony, with Mark Williams on didgeridoo and local custodian Justine Dillon performing a Welcome to Country.
The graduates entered the ceremony through cleansing smoke that blessed them to provide safe passage on their journey out on Kombumerri Country, and received an ochre blessing for protection. Justine gave a special mention to graduate Sofia Mynott, who has been volunteering with the Kombumerri rangers this year and who has become an important ally, helping them in their work.
Cara Shipp, Head of Senior School, and Jordan Abrahams spoke on behalf of all staff and advisors. They commented on how joyful and joyous this year group has been, always looking for fun, funny and kind ways to connect with each other and the world, with a strong commitment to social and environmental action.
Past primary and middle school advisors were remembered and acknowledged. Significant family, friends and mentors delivered gifts to each student while a personal affirmation from their advisor was read out. Cara and the student representatives Jai, Zac, Grace and Siaan gave special thanks to the following wonderful staff for their guidance in the senior years:
Advisors: Jordan Abrahams, Carly Hollonds, Reyna Abe and Jessie Wilson Support staff: Danielle Woolard, Bella Woolard, Tai Hood and Fiona McConachy
Be active participants on the field of life, not mere spectators in the grandstands.

Transition Ceremonies
Year 1 Transition Ceremony
Reflecting on an incredible year, the Silkwood Year 1 community gathered to commemorate the children's transition to Year 2. The ceremony was a heartwarming and emotional affair, leaving hardly a dry eye in the room. Our pride in the children extends beyond their educational accomplishments to the kindness and consideration they consistently show one another. As they embark on their continued learning journey, we have full confidence that these young individuals will remain lifelong friends, fostering a bond that goes beyond the classroom.
As we look back on the vibrant tapestry of memories woven during their time in Primary School, the Silkwood Year 5 community united to honor the students' transition to Middle School. The ceremony symbolising this pivotal moment was a profoundly touching experience!
Our admiration for these students extends far beyond their school achievements. It is evident in their thoughtful actions, the unwavering support they offer each other and the evident growth as individuals as they navigate self-discovery and the myriad possibilities life holds. As they embark on the next phase of their journey, we are confident that these exceptional young individuals will thrive in the exciting chapter that lies ahead.
Embarking on a new chapter! Exiting Middle School and stepping into Senior School is a major milestone in every student's journey. The air is buzzing with excitement for both students and their families!
With the promise of greater independence and thrilling new activities, this transition is truly a special moment.
To make this transition even more memorable, Silkwood has crafted a beautiful ceremony that captures the magic of this moment.
Let's celebrate this significant achievement together!
Grandparents are the unsung heroes of our lives, showering us with their wisdom and affection. Today, we came together to embrace and honour the wonderful grandparents of Silkwood, recognising the enchanting influence they bring into the daily lives of our students.
The connection between grandparents and grandchildren is beyond words — endless love, unwavering support, and invaluable wisdom. They help to shape and inspire our young minds to be their authentic selves, carrying forth a legacy of love and timeless values through the ages.
It was truly heartwarming to witness these extraordinary bonds within our community. We feel incredibly fortunate to celebrate these precious moments together!
A massive shoutout to the SCCA for organising yet another splendid Grandparents Day Breakfast. A heartfelt thank you to all those who made this day possible.
Engaging Incursions and Dynamic In-Class Activities
Year 5's exploration of Greek Mythology and culture this term has been an incredible journey!
Last week, we wrapped up the unit with an unforgettable Greek Festival. Our students put their creative and problem-solving skills to the test as they constructed catapults and competed to see who could achieve the longest throw, hit the bullseye, or land in the bucket.
They truly unleashed their inner engineers!
But that's not all – our students also embraced the spirit of ancient Greece by participating in the Greek Olympics, featuring three exciting events: the javelin (tennis ball throw), wrestling, and chariot racing.
The top 6 students in each event earned well-deserved medals!
Students also thoroughly enjoyed getting hands-on experience in crafting pottery inspired by the ancient Greek style.
To wrap it all up, students enjoyed a Greek feast that truly felt like a journey to the heart of Greece.
It is an excellent illustration of acquiring knowledge through experience and creating memories of moments that truly matter.
Friday, October 20th, our amazing year 2/3 students came together to support the Story Dog program.
Natalie and her adorable furry friend Tica visit our year 2/3 class every week, giving our students the fantastic opportunity to read to Tica.
To add some more fun to this heartwarming initiative, students and advisors dressed in their best animal-inspired clothing and accessories in exchange for a small gold coin donation.
The creativity was off the charts as our young scholars dressed up in everything from animal prints to cat ears, costumes, and all manner of animal-themed clothing.
Our dedicated advisors diligently collected the gold coins, all of which will be channelled towards supporting the Story Dog program.
The Story Dog program is a wonderful non-profit organisation staffed by volunteers, and your contributions will go a long way in helping them continue their amazing work.

It's time to shine a spotlight on the incredible talent and creativity within our school! As part of the Silkwood Personal Interest Learning Time (PILT) program, students take the lead in a student-to-student mentorship program.
Middle school students are making their mark during PILT time, sharing their skills and knowledge with our younger friends and supporting them throughout the project cycle.
Our amazing mentors are stepping up to the plate in various areas, from illustrating and gaming to IT and writing graphic novels.
They're also diving into sketching, digital art, and getting creative with recycled material.
It's an inspiring journey that's not just about learning but also about building lasting friendships and creating a positive impact. We can't wait to see all the incredible projects and collaborations that come out of PILT!
Year 8 students had a blast afternoon as they completed and put their bridges to the test! This exciting group project was a key part of our Exploring unit in Engineering. Over two lessons, they delved into the fascinating world of tension and compression forces, investigating which shapes, angles, and materials are the most resilient against these forces. Kudos to our Year 8 students for their exceptional effort and teamwork – you all did a fantastic job!
As part of the Silkwood Exploring learning frame focused on Asian tales, our Year 2 students had an exciting day! They were treated to a captivating Kung Fu demonstration and a mesmerising traditional Lion dance.
To prepare for an upcoming camping adventure, the students enjoyed an Asian feast. This delightful experience satisfied their taste buds and helped them develop essential real-world skills. They learned the art of using a buffet, practising patience while waiting in line, taking turns, mastering portion sizes, and using cutlery correctly.
These valuable skills will undoubtedly come in handy during their camping trip and in many other aspects of life.
As part of the Silkwood Exploring program, our amazing Year 1 students stepped into the enchanting world of the circus!
They embarked on a journey filled with excitement and wonder during their lessons at primary school. The joy and amazement on their faces were truly heartwarming!
Circus lessons are not just about learning new skills; they're also a fantastic way for our students to build confidence, balance, and coordination. It's all about having fun, pushing boundaries and discovering hidden talents.
We were thrilled to have the amazing Jesinta Franklin at Silkwood Senior School last week!
Jesinta, renowned Australian model and beauty pageant titleholder, published author, and brand ambassador, returned to her Silkwood School roots and shared her wisdom with some of our senior students.
Growing up on the sunny Gold Coast, Queensland, Silkwood School proudly claims Jesinta as our own, one of two original founding students. Carving out an inspiring career from a young age through hard work and dedication, Jesinta embodies our Student Aims, particularly:
- To use passions, talents and skills to create a future that excites them and contributes positively to our world
- To turn dreams and ideas into reality
- To see the adventure, opportunity, connections, and possibilities in life
During her visit, Jesinta mentored our students who aspire to careers in modelling, marketing, and sports management. Her insightful guidance and stories of her own career and business journey left our students buzzing with motivation. She emphasised the importance of finding your purpose in the work you love and setting focused goals to channel your energy into achieving them.
When asked about our new Senior School campus, Jesinta replied, "It's fantastic! We’ve come a long way from hay bales!”
We can't thank Jesinta enough for taking the time to inspire the next generation of talent.
Year 9 Trade Skills Program
Our Year 9 Trade Skills Program in partnership with Year 9 Advisors has been an amazing journey, supporting students who have a passion for hands-on projects!
Throughout Term 3, our students delved into real-world math, learning crucial concepts like measurement, geometry, and financial management, all while taking on the exciting challenge of building a skateboard ramp.
During this project, students had the opportunity to venture off-campus for a visit to Bunnings, where they handpicked the finest timber and supplies. Our students received invaluable guidance from our incredible site team, mastering the use of tools and equipment. As Corey wisely puts it, "We learned to measure twice and cut once."
But this project isn't just about woodworking and measurements; it's closely tied to their Personal Interest Projects! Corey is carving his path towards a future in the trades, while Phoenix is crafting a mesmerising skateboarding highlights video this term, and Zen is on a mission to create a skate clothing brand.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Greg and our phenomenal site team, Denise and Donna.
Huge applause for Corey, Phoenix, and Zen for their dedication and fantastic work!
Middle and Senior school students embraced a unique learning experience this term – a First Aid Course with First Aid Accident and Emergency Training.
It's not just about the books; it's about real-world learning! Our students had the chance to put theory into action, gaining hands-on experience and earning their well-deserved First Aid Certificates.
What a fantastic way to empower our students with life-saving skills!

Sara's passion and dedication were contagious, leaving our students with a newfound drive to pursue their goals.
Olympics Unleashed has been an incredible experience for our school community, emphasising the importance of setting goals, overcoming challenges, and believing in oneself.
Sara's powerful message resonated with our students, inspiring them to consider the possibility of representing Australia in future Olympic Games.
Let's continue this journey beyond today, setting our sights high, overcoming obstacles, and supporting one another on the path to success.

In Term 4 our Year 5's embarked on a fantastic fashion journey!
Aleysha Campbell, our incredible Fashion Stylist, dropped some serious style wisdom, giving our students tips on outfit magic, choosing the 'hero piece,' and crafting the perfect flat lay.
But that's not all – Year 5 dove into the world of clothing, colors, and even explored the art of fashion parade commentary... in Italian!
They've been perfecting their catwalk strides, striking poses, and flexing their public speaking muscles in both Italian and English.
Each student became a fashion commentator extraordinaire, writing their very own bilingual commentary to introduce themselves and flaunt their chosen outfits in Italian and English.
Our fashion parade wasn't just about style; it was a chance for our kiddos to shine, boosting their Italian language skills while promoting confidence, self-expression, and creativity.
Plus, it was a teamwork and presentation skills bonanza, adding a touch of cultural flair to make learning an absolute blast!
Cheers to Year 5 for embracing the runway and turning it into a holistic, enjoyable learning experience!

Dr. Eldin is working hard to pursue a career in medicine. With his goal of owning his own GP clinic in the future, Eldin has completed a Diploma in Business. Through this, he also realised his passion for entrepreneurship. His personal projects have transitioned from delving into aspects of body systems and branches of medicine to a social media/marketing project advertising car dealerships on the Gold Coast, and now to property development.
His final project and exhibition included a mock pitch to investors to purchase his high-end townhouses, Serenity Estate. Eldin researched and developed the floor plans for four styles of townhouses, priced the build, and developed the marketing, considering location, amenities, and target market. He used construction software to design his floor plans.
Eldin has also completed Biology and Maths Methods courses achieving mostly A grades. On the side, he has enjoyed creating online self-help videos and blogs. He completed the push-up challenge as part of his social action, raising money for mental health and aligning with his interest in health.
Reflecting on his choice to move to Silkwood School in Year 11, Eldin values the time and space given to focus on the specific courses he needs for his pathways, and the ability to complete courses at his own pace, rather than the time-pressured and rigid schedule of traditional schools. His math results are higher than he's achieved in the past, and he feels more confident going into his field of interest with these stronger results.
With applications in for SCU and Griffith University to study Science and Biomedicine, and his entrepreneurial eye for property development, we know he'll go far! Well done, Eldin.
Update: Eldin attained early entry into Griffith University for Biomedicine! Congratulations Eldin!
Year 12 exhibitions - Meet Zac
Blown away by this brainiac, who is revolutionising commerce with unique systems that he programs himself
Zac has become an expert in web and system development and is all over AI developments. His senior project explored AI and automation, considering sustainability and the integration of AI in developing countries.
To expand his skills, Zac spent every Tuesday working with the amazing Nik Donovan, a mentor who has worked on his grandfather and uncle's businesses. One of his tasks was to develop a 'rent or buy calculator' which supports users in weighing up whether to rent or buy a property based on their personal financial circumstances and goals.
Taking his skills to even more real-world applications, Zac then set out to improve efficiency in his mum's business, Gala Equine, creating a SKU location system to streamline packing orders.
After this, Zac started to work with his employer, Bunnings Nerang, to increase efficiency in the garden centre. He set up a database for their plant care encyclopedia and created a training app to help team members learn about the plants they are selling (growing conditions, uses, etc.). He has a vision for expanding this into other sections of the store, so eventually any team member will be able to move around the store and answer customer queries with the help of the app.
Having started his online business, Cyberplay, at 13, moving on to crypto trading, software development, and finance studies through yr 8-11, it's no surprise to see what Zac is now capable of. He has spent 324 hours planning and writing code this year while also completing his Diploma in Business.
Throughout high school, Zac has also loved sports and completed a Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, as well as participating in the Push Up Challenge, raising money for mental health.
Zac plans to head to Griffith University next year to study Computer Science.
Amazing work, Zac!

Let's keep the learning adventures rolling, Silkwood Senior Students!
At the beginning of this year, we introduced our Senior School Students to an amazing work experience opportunity at Australia Zoo. One outstanding student from year 10, Leo B, seized the chance and submitted an application. Guess what? Out of a pool of talented applicants, Leo was the one selected! He spent an entire week on the Sunshine Coast.
"The Australia Zoo work experience program run by Vicky was one of the best experiences I've done" Leo B.
Throughout the program, he had the opportunity to engage with numerous dedicated zookeepers, collaborating on various tasks such as cleaning, observing, locating, educating visitors, and feeding.
During the program, he was assigned to three primary departments: Birds, Roos (including quokkas), and Koalas. Over the course of the week, he visited the rescue hospital to take care of sick sea turtles, baby koalas, injured or unwell koalas, as well as lizards, bats, and any animals in need of assistance.
Exploring behind-the-scenes areas was a highlight, including the site where hay is prepared for the zebras, and the opportunity to feed the giraffes was a unique experience. Interactions with tortoises and witnessing the captivating crocodile show left a lasting impression.
On the final day, Leo was given the freedom to choose his preferred department, and he opted for Birds. He took on a variety of tasks, working with cassowaries, emus, and various pigeon and parrot species.
For those with a passion for animals, Leo wholeheartedly recommends enrolling in the program, which is offered every term. After all, who wouldn't want to spend their day surrounded by animals?
Congratulations to Leo for participating in this remarkable opportunity.
Senior School Campus Legacy
This Term, our talented year 12 student, Oliver, added a touch to the mural at the Senior School campus staircase with a stunning dragonfly painting.
At Silkwood, we're all about nurturing our students' passions and dreams. Oliver's journey is a prime example of how we encourage our students to explore their interests fully.
In Year 11, he devoted his Personal Learning Interest Time (PILT) to his love for art and painting. However, In Year 12, he decided to invest in his love for music, embarking on a captivating journey into this world.
Oliver aspires to become an educator, sharing his expertise and passion in either art, music, or perhaps even both.
This is his time to explore, discover, and find the path that resonates most with his heart, and we're here to support him every step of the way.
Let's celebrate Oliver's dedication, creativity, and the incredible painting he's left as a testament to his journey at our school!
Celebrating Outstanding Achievements!
Our students shine bright with their unwavering dedication, hard work, and remarkable accomplishments in their chosen Personal Interest Learning Projects.
Join us in applauding these exceptional individuals who will be honoured with well-deserved awards from external organisations. These accolades are a testament to their commitment and passion.
Let's extend heartfelt congratulations to all our students for their incredible dedication and hard work in achieving their goals!
Here are some standout achievements:
Kai R - HOTA Arts Academic Award / Duke of Ed Silver Holly H - Aurora Trainee of the Year Hunter N - Nerang RSL Bursary / Duke of Ed Silver Eden D - Nerang RSL Bursary Jess K - HOTA Future Creative Award
Organised by two talented Year 5 students Skye W and Madison A, during their Personal Interest Learning Time, the show was nothing short of spectacular. We witnessed incredible performances ranging from singing and musical talents to acting and dancing. One of the highlights of the evening was when our Year 4 student Lucy D took the stage. With heartfelt emotion, she sang a beautiful song to her little sister, who has Down syndrome. Lucy not only sang with passion but also translated the lyrics into sign language, creating a deeply moving experience for everyone present.
This was a remarkable moment that we will cherish, and it has inspired us to continue celebrating the unique talents and heartfelt connections within our school community. Here's to many more years of fostering creativity, passions, talents, compassion, and unforgettable moments like these!
Our Middle School graduates are making waves with the incredible Year 9 Legacy Project!
Reflecting on their unforgettable Middle School memories, our amazing students are determined to leave a lasting impact and make the school even better for future students.
Introducing the 'MS Graduation Gallery Walk,' where our talented Year 9 (Graduate Class of 2023) students have unveiled their inaugural contribution!
They've come together to create a breathtaking collaborative mural painting accompanied by an artist statement.
The mural captures key moments in their school journey, highlighting the significance of each memory to our fantastic Year 9 students.
But wait, there's more!
Our Year 9 stars embarked on a Bird Box building project, supporting the conservation of their totem animal, the Glossy Black cockatoo.
Plus, they teamed up with our incredible site team to relocate one of our Middle School Yarning circle spaces to a stunning new location.
Now, it's surrounded by lush new turf and freshly planted trees for that perfect shade spot.
Our Year 9 students are truly making a mark, and we can't wait to see the positive impact they continue to create!
A big congratulations to Annika Björkman, our Year 10 student, for her well-deserved selection to play for Queensland at the National Schools Tournament!
Alongside Annika, we also extend heartfelt congratulations to Taika, who has been chosen to represent the Gold Coast at the State Championship Carnival, and to Josh, who will be showcasing his talent at the Regional State Carnival. Your achievements make us proud, and we wish you all the best in your respective tournaments!
